A Career in the Heart of Mexican Culture: Mexico City

Welcome to Mexico City: A Unique Career and Cultural Experience

Have you ever thought about embarking on a completely new life? In this edition, we explore the unique and fulfilling experience of working at our Mexico City office, where highly rewarding career opportunities meet the enchanting charm of this authentic capital.

We’ll provide you with insights from Stephanie McDermott, one of our dedicated wealth managers based in Mexico City, in order to help you visualise what it’s like to move into a new role in a new environment!

Embrace the Vibrant Atmosphere of Mexico City

Before we get onto the office, Mexico City is a capital that teems with life, offering a dynamic environment for professionals seeking an energetic, diverse city experience. Stephanie McDermott highlights the city’s pulsating atmosphere, noting her favourite spots in the Polanco district, where our office is based!

Stephanie shares an anecdote from her first year in Mexico City: “I was amazed by the energy of the city. Every day felt like a new adventure. One of my fondest memories was the first time I attended a salsa class. I was a bit shy at first, but the locals were incredibly welcoming and supportive. It was then I realised that living and working here would be a truly unique experience”.

Here, amidst rooftop bars and cultural settings, you can dive deep into the local culture and enjoy the city's authentic nightlife.

Language and Culture: Navigating Mexico as a Foreigner

While English isn’t as commonly spoken as Spanish, the city’s official language, Stephanie assures that visitors can easily get by. She encourages embracing the local language and culture, as doing so can enrich your experience and foster deeper connections with the community.
How do local traditions influence the workplace, you might ask? Stephanie shares that local customs bring a unique flavour to the office culture. For example, the team celebrates the Day of the Dead in November, a cultural event that showcases beautiful Mexican traditions.

The Top Three Spots to Visit and Consider for Relocation

We asked Steph about her top three recommendations for places to explore and potentially relocate to within Mexico City:

Polanco

Our office's area, known for its exquisite bars and restaurants, offering vibrant atmospheres and a chance to taste culinary delights.

Acapulco

A heavenly beach haven just a 40-minute flight away. Perfect for sun, sand, and relaxation.

Presidente Masaryk

A shopper's paradise. Here, you can indulge in some retail therapy with a vast selection of trendy fashion brands.

Your Future Home: Standard of Living and Property Availability

Mexico City offers a reasonable cost of living. Stephanie suggests exploring house-sharing options to further cut costs. With housing readily available within walking distance of the office and diverse transportation options, commuting definitely isn’t an issue.
Polanco joins Reforma, Roma, and Condesa as some of the safest areas to live in Mexico City. As these places tend to be more tourist-friendly and offer numerous attractions, restaurants, and cultural experiences, they also have much lower crime rates.
It’s also the closest area to Chapultepec Park, which is twice the size of Central Park in New York. The park is home to several museums, even though it’s an attraction in its own right, and is free for everyone to enter – so if you’re an aspiring Nathan Drake, you might already have a calling..!

The Freedom to Pursue Goals and Ambitions

A bit more about Stephanie and the deVere culture! Upon joining deVere, she discovered a space where she could express her personal goals and ambitions openly. Like all our offices, our Mexico City location offers the chance for each individual to carve out their own career path and pursue their aspirations. “I’ve been able to grow both professionally and personally here”, Stephanie reveals. “The company supports my goals, encouraging me to undertake challenging projects that have significantly enhanced my skills and competencies”.
Stephanie’s journey is an excellent illustration of the opportunities our company culture affords to ambitious individuals with a success-oriented mindset. She began as a trainee in 2018, in our Barcelona office, before transitioning to our Marbella office as a full-time Business Development Associate. After making a significant impact in Spain, Stephanie relocated to our training hub in the heart of London, UK. Here, she supported new starters, providing them with product and industry knowledge. She also helped equip them with the soft and hard skills necessary to excel in a finance-oriented environment!
Yet, like many who join our team, Stephanie found it hard to stay in one place for too long. She says, “As long as you have a strong base, you have the freedom to explore and achieve whatever you want”. Living by these words, Stephanie moved on from London to Mexico City, first serving as a Head Senior Associate, and now as a full-time Wealth Management Advisor.
In just five years, Stephanie has lived in four different locations and she’s eyeing a fifth! This is a sentiment echoed by many deVere employees – she notes, “A career with this company truly is what you make of it. If you have that itch, that feeling that you’re meant for something more, you really can zero in on that and chart your own path”.
