1961: Alan Shepard, Jr., made a 15-minute suborbital flight in the Freedom 7 spacecraft, becoming the first U.S. astronaut to travel in space.

1862: On this day in 1862, Mexico repelled the French forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla, a victory that became a symbol of resistance to foreign domination and is now celebrated as a national holiday, Cinco de Mayo.

1850: The National Bank of Belgium is founded as a public limited-liability company. Its shares are still publicly traded — making it one of the world’s only central banks you can still own a piece of — but NBB’s stock has underperformed the Belgian market as a whole.

1818: Karl Marx is born in Trier, Germany. Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, and revolutionary socialist who lived from 1818 to 1883. He is best known for his influential works on political economy and his critique of capitalism.
